This brief tour will show you some of the most representative attractions in Bulgaria and Romania - two of the unfamiliar treasures of Eastern Europe.
Day #1 - Sofia
Arrival in Sofia. Your journey begins with a panoramic sightseeing tour of Sofia - the Byzantine church of Saint Sofia, the Alexander Nevsky cathedral and icon gallery, the Archaeological museum, the Roman gate and the ruins of the Roman fortification system, the Saint George Rotunda and other places of interest. Dinner and overnight.
Day #2 - Rila Monastery - Plovdiv
After breakfast you will visit the Rila monastery (included in UNESCO World Heritage List) - the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. Lunch at a restaurant near the monastery. Then, departure to the oldest Bulgarian ski resort Borovets, situated on the highest mountain on the Balkan Peninsula - the Rila mountain. You will continue to the second-largest city in Bulgaria - Plovdiv. Dinner and overnight in Plovdiv.
Day #3 - Plovdiv - Kazanlak
After breakfast, you will take a sightseeing tour of the Old Town of Plovdiv - you will see the Stadium, The Roman amphitheatre, the Forum, the Mosque, the Ethnographical museum and the Saint Constantine and Helena church. Lunch. In the afternoon you will continue to Kazanlak and the world famous Bulgarian Rose Valley. There you will visit the Thracian tomb of Kazanlak (included in the UNESCO World Heritage List) and the Ethnographic museum. Dinner and overnight in Kazanlak.
Day #4 - Veliko Tarnovo - Arbanassi
Breakfast. Continue to Veliko Tarnovo. On the way you will stop to see the Shipka Memorial church, dedicated to the Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian soldiers who gave their lives for the liberation of Bulgaria in the Russo-Turkish War. Lunch in Veliko Tarnovo. Sightseeing tour of Veliko Tarnovo, known as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire - you will see the Tsarevets hill, the fortress, the Patriarchal church, the small churches in the foothill of Trapezitsa. Dinner and overnight in Arbanassi (an architectual and historical reserve, 5 km. away from Veliko Tarnovo).
Day #5 - Romania
After breakfast, you will head to Romania. You will cross the border at Rousse on the Danube river. You will enjoy a drive to Cimpina and you will go to the Lulia Hasdeu museum. You will visit Sinaia - one of the most beautiful mountain resorts in Romania, called the "Pearl Of The Carpathian Mountains". You will see the former Royal summer residence, built by Carol I of Romania. Then you will take a leisurely walk to the 17th centur Sinaia monastery, founded by Prince Mihai Cantacuzino in 1965 and named after the great Sinai monastery on mount Sinai. Dinner and accommodation in Sinaia.
Day #6 - Sinaia - Bran - Brasov - Sinaia
In the morning you will depart to Bran for a visit to the Bran Castle. Commonly known as Dracula's Castle, it was originally a stronghold built by the Knights of the Teutonic Order in 1212. In addition to its unique architecture, the castle is famous because of persistent myths that it was once home of Vlad The Impaler, a famous medieval warlord. the castle's rooms and towers surround an inner courtyard. Some rooms are connected through underground passages to the inner court. Bran is a home to a rich collection of Romanian and foreign furniture as well as art items from 14th - 19th centuries. Continue to the town of Brasov. Sightseeing tour of the medieval centre of Brasov with a visit to the Black church. Free time for lunch. In the afternoon - continue to Sighisoara - a visit to the Medieval Citadel (included in the UNESCO World Heritage List). Transfer back to Sinaia. Dinner and overnight in Sinaia.
Day #7 - Bucharest
After breakfast you will head to the Peles Castle (19th century), considered by some to be the most beautiful in Europe and even in the whole world. The Peles Castle is a masterpiece of German new-Renaissance architecture and it shelters one of the most important and valuable painting collections in Europe - almost 2,000 pieces. After the visit to the castle you will take a sightseeing tour of Bucharest - the capital of Romania, founded 500 years ago. During the 1930's its tree-lined boulevards and fin de siecle architecture earned it the nickname "The Little Paris Of The East". Dinner and overnight in Bucharest.
Day #8 - Bucharest
Breakfast. Transfer to Bucharest aiurport.
